Spring Appeal 2020
“Every year, Summer brings with it warmer temperatures, longer days and the smell of fresh cut grass.”Living in an area near the Rio Grande River but still smack dab in the middle of a desert comes with some challenges. In 1978 and 1979, when I was just 4 years old, I had my first “responsibility” at The Ranches. I was the person “responsible” for the application of “purple stuff” on PVC fittings as we set about putting in a sprinkler system that could water the 14 acres (or 600,000 square feet) of grass on our campus. Front yards, back yards, the baseball diamond and the areas between buildings were seeded with grass and I got to apply the “purple stuff” for what seemed like an eternity. In reality, it was just the summer months of 1978 and 1979. Since then, much has changed, but the amount of grass, the amount of mowing and the amount of time dedicated to the upkeep of our campus have remained the same.
Mowing the equivalent of a small 9-hole golf course every week can be daunting and rather hard on mowers. I am writing today to ask for your support in helping us to purchase a commercial grade lawn mower – to be operated by a qualified staff member – to help us maintain our grass.
While some occasionally mention their belief that we should xeriscape the campus in order to achieve some perceived state of heightened enlightenment concerning landscaping, the cost would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to do that. Also, soccer, baseball, kickball and tag are all significantly less fun when running on and traversing gravel. In our experience, based on our proximity to the Rio Grande, plants and weeds are going to grow on our land. We’d rather that be grass than weeds peeking through beautiful, outrageously expensive and heat retentive rocks.
A generous donor has pledged $5,000 to start this project and we are hoping you can help us raise an additional $10,000 for a mower that is built to last and to make our grass a safe and beautiful place to play and grow up…and make positive memories.
Your donations will insure that this year we can again enjoy the warmer temperatures, longer days and smell of fresh cut grass as we work to provide the children at The Ranches some positive memories and experiences to balance out some of the more traumatic and painful times in their young lives. Your support makes what we do possible and we thank you for your continued support.
