Why does a children’s charity like New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches need a Foundation?
We do not accept government funding. Consequently, monies needed to operate all of our childcare programs must be raised annually. This requires that we utilize a wide variety of fund raising activities, including direct mail, estate planning, special events, gift annuities and the like. Additionally, donors through the years have given us assets that must be actively managed, sometimes on their behalf. These include trusts, bequests, oil and gas royalties, stocks, bonds, real estate and gift annuity contracts. As a service to our donors, we will also serve as the executor of their estate when immediate family is not available. The legal structure of a foundation enables us to conduct all of these activities under state and federal law.

Why don’t you accept government funding?
Government funding tends to be very unstable – each time there is a budget crunch, social service programs are usually the first to be cut. Our faith-based values could also affect future funding.

How can I obtain a copy of your annual report or 990?
Copies of our annual report and Form 990 tax returns are available upon request. Call our offices at 1-800-660-0289 or write us at 6209 Hendrix Rd. NE, 2 FL, Albuquerque, NM 87110.

Can I create an endowment or scholarship fund?
Yes. Since 1984, permanent endowment, memorial, education and scholarships funds have been a popular and lasting way to provide for children at The Ranches. The principal of these funds is pooled and only the interest is used for our programs.

The endowment and scholarship programs have several brief guidelines:
• The minimum to establish a fund is $1000.
• The income from Permanent Endowment and Permanent Memorial funds is used for program expenses.
• The income from Education Endowment and Scholarship Funds is used for our on-campus schools and helps children from The Ranches attend college, university or trade school.
• Your fund is invested and pooled with other funds.
• You can add subsequent gifts to your fund at any time with any amount.
• A framed photograph and short biography of you or your loved one will be permanently displayed at Boys Ranch.
• A brass leaf engraved with your name or the name of your friend or loved one is placed on our Tree of Life.
• A list of all funds is published annually in our Corral newsletter.
• Once a year a report will be sent to you listing the principal amount in your fund and the overall performance of the pooled fund.

What is the difference between a Permanent Memorial Fund and a Permanent Endowment Fund?
The only difference between these two endowment funds is that one is in memory of a deceased friend or loved one, while the other honors someone still living. Eventually, permanent endowments become permanent memorials.
